Why gates reverse
Modern operators monitor safety inputs and, depending on the system, motor effort or encoder movement. If the controller believes something is in the gate path or the motor is working too hard, it may stop or reverse
That reaction can be caused by a real obstruction, but also by poor alignment, worn rollers, a tight hinge, damaged rack, incorrect force settings or a safety device changing state
- Photocell beam interrupted
- Safety edge activation
- Gate movement becoming heavy
- Incorrect limits or encoder position
- Loop detector changing state
- Loose or intermittent controller input
Why increasing force is not the first fix
Increasing motor force can mask a heavy gate or mechanical defect. It may make the gate move, but it can also increase impact forces and load the motor, gearbox, rack and gate hardware
The gate should be checked mechanically before force or sensitivity settings are altered
How the fault is isolated
The technician reproduces the fault safely, checks the controller indication and determines whether the stop came from safety logic, position control or motor loading
Testing the gate through its entire travel is essential because a wheel, hinge or rack problem may occur in only one location
Automatic gates and doors can cause serious injury. Keep clear of moving equipment and live electrical parts. If operation is unpredictable or unsafe, isolate the system where practical and arrange professional assessment
