Why an automatic gate becomes slow, noisy or intermittent

A gate usually gives warning before a complete failure. Changes in speed, sound or reliability are worth investigating while the entrance still operates

Mechanical causes

Worn wheels, damaged track, dry or failing hinges, loose rack, chain alignment, guide pressure and structural movement can increase the load on the operator

The gate should move consistently through its full travel. A problem in one section can explain faults that appear random

  • Heavy travel or tight spots
  • Worn wheels or hinges
  • Rack or chain misalignment
  • Loose brackets and fixings
  • Gate rubbing guides or posts
  • Impact or ground movement

Electrical and control causes

Weak batteries, voltage drop, loose connections, overheating, water ingress and failing relays can create faults that change with temperature, rain or time of day

Controller diagnostics and measured testing are more useful than repeated resets

Act before secondary damage

An operator working against extra resistance can damage gearboxes, mountings, rack, chain and electronics. Early repair may be smaller than the eventual breakdown

Record when the problem occurs and take a short video where safe. That evidence can make intermittent fault finding faster
